Myanmar

Coffee was first introduced to Myanmar (formerly Burma) in 1885 by British colonists. In the past few years, investments in milling and education have brought about the birth of a true specialty coffee business in the country. This month’s coffee is a blend from several estates in Myanmar, primarily Greenland and Blue Mountain estates.

Myanmar is a new player in the world of specialty coffee. For the last several years, Atlas Coffee Importers has partnered with farms in Myanmar to help promote the growth of specialty coffee and improve market access. Atlas saw great potential in the region: the geography is well suited for specialty coffee, and the people of Myanmar were willing to learn and adapt their methods to create better quality. The determination from both parties made for a great foundation to work toward better quality and more opportunity.

We roasted several test batches of this coffee and it was hard to choose a favorite. The beans are highly adaptable and showed interesting qualities at various degrees of roast. We decided to highlight the elegant, soft character of this coffee which is a testament to the origin’s meticulous picking and processing. We think Myanmar has made its mark in the specialty coffee industry and we’re very excited to see where things go from here.
